Growth Happens in the Stretch Zone

1. Understanding Growth

Growth happens in the so called stretch zone—a mental space we instinctively avoid. It’s not mysterious; our brains are wired to seek control, predictability, and familiarity because these reduce stress and anxiety. So, we steer clear of discomfort.

At the beginning of our careers, two things typically happen. In the first one, we believe that what we know is all that is to be known, thanks to the Dunning-Kruger effect. Then, reality hits. We begin to see the limits of our knowledge and realize that a whole world of learning lies beyond what we know, beyond our comfort zone in the stretch zone.

Early on, we lean into the stretch zone by necessity—there is no comfort zone yet. But over the years, as we build experience, security, and routines, we slowly drift into this comfort and away from opportunities to growth that could require us to lean into a world of uncertainty, the inner fight begins, should I step into this uncertainty to advance and grow? Or should I stay comfortably where I am, inside my knowledge zone? And as you see we sabotage ourselves and hold ourselves back.

2. Why Do We Hold Ourselves Back?

Think of the stretch zone as a forest with a big sign that reads “Go Away” and a smaller label carved beneath it: “If you cross this line, you’ll likely face frustration, pain, uncertainty, fear, and anxiety.” That’s how our emotional brain sees it.

It rarely feels like an invitation to growth. It takes years of back-and-forth between zones to learn to see opportunity instead of threat. Our emotional brain is constantly scanning for danger, especially at the edge of our comfort zone.

To grow means to intentionally face uncertainty, fears, and the unknown. And even after deciding to step out, your inner critic—the insecure part of you—will try to pull you back again into the already known game. If you retreat, it becomes harder to try next time again.

As an EHS professional, I’ve stretched beyond my comfort zone many times. I know how much knowledge, skill, and grit are required to grow in this field, and just if you wonder, yes, to grow I faced frustration, pain, uncertainty, fear, and anxiety, this are not unknow to me, but the final reward has always been worth every inch of the stretch for me and for my family.

3. Common Stretch Zones in EHS

Here are some common areas where EHS professionals may find themselves stretching:

  • Transitioning between office and field work
  • Dealing with complex topics like a Safety professional learning and dealing with industrial hygiene topics.
  • Switching industries (e.g., from general industry to construction safety)
  • Learning about new topics like welding safety, confined spaces, etc.
  • Completing a Job Safety Analysis with an experienced crew where you know you need their know-how to understand the steps and hazards.
  • Giving a toolbox talk in front of a large group.
  • Speaking at executive project review meetings.
  • Leading projects or investigations.
  • Conducting training or performing audits.

Whatever you find professionally or personally challenging, there probably lies your stretch zone—your own area for growth.

4. The Hard Part

Identifying your stretch zone is one thing. Walking through it? That’s the real challenge.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t get easier overnight. It takes time, repetition, and emotional resilience. The first few times will be uncomfortable. You might feel overwhelmed or panicked. But with each attempt, your stretch zone becomes more familiar, and the learning zone more accessible, it is like is you are an explorer outside your plains and into the forest.

5. My Case

For me, it was public speaking. I used to dodge it whenever I could—subconsciously chose tasks that kept me behind the scenes. I never labeled it as a fear or thought about what I was feeling, I just avoided it, in fact I didn’t even allow me time to think if I would enjoy doing it.

But early in my career, I worked as a consultant, visiting site project after site project and some manufacturing facilities, this during the week days and delivering OSHA 10hrs on weekends and eventually OSHA 30hrs classes to employees across the valley over the course of a month. I admit it, I had to know OSHA codes (1926 and 1910) inside and out, I was dipping in and out of my stretch zone.

Over time, those repeated efforts expanded my comfort zone. I knew I had grown when I could stand in front of a large audience—not with fear or defensiveness, but with openness and confidence in my knowledge, and training delivery. My emotional and thinking brain were finally aligned and this was no longer a stretch zone, my comfort zone had expanded.

6. What Is Your Stretch?

Doing the same thing inside your comfort zone over and over, builds mastery—not necessarily growth. Yes, repetition teaches you things, but real growth requires you to develop new skills, face discomfort, and overcome internal resistance.

Have you identified your stretch zone? That’s the place where you’ll grow. That’s where you’ll find transformation. It might feel like a crisis at first, but in that challenge lies your opportunity. Seize your opportunity!

7. Tips that Helps Me Lean into My Stretch Zone

If you’re considering leading a project, speaking up, applying for a new role, having a tough conversation—or even learning a new language—here are a few things that help me navigate the uncertainty:

  1. Shift your perspective: Are you imagining the worst? What actual proof do you have that it’ll go badly? Could it be just stories and assumptions clouding your view?
  2. Always scan for impostor syndrome: Recognize it, name it, and keep going.
  3. Look back at past leaps: What have you overcome before? What benefits did you gain from past stretches?
  4. Ask yourself: What would I gain if I embraced this stretch? What could this mean for my future?

Final thought: Growth doesn’t happen by chance. It happens by choice—every time we choose to step into the unknown. Keep this is mind for when you want to become or explore your options to become the best version of your self, a worldclass professional that the stretch zone is where all that magic happens.
