Busy, Compliant, and Stuck: A Hard Truth About Safety Work

Committed and confident, yet the needle is not moving?. Have you ever felt stuck, compliant, busy and even though knowing they are not moving you forward? Reflecting on my career, I named this the Illusion of Progress, or the Ghost Script.

These ghosts are not regulations, resources, or resistance in the field. They are internal: quiet scripts, old beliefs, ingrained habits, that silently shape our careers and how we show up.

This is a dangerous place. Nothing is broken, urgency is absent, and clarity is replaced by compliance. You are reliable, technically strong, yet believing that consistency equals progress without direction, can and will quietly stall your career.

Efficient, Compliant but Disconnected

Allow me to share a snippet of my EHS journey, which I know resonates with many EHS colleagues. Several years ago, I was in a manager role. This role demand of me to often have have formal and informal meetings. To deliver training sessions, and implementing safety programs in almost what we can call a copy-and-paste fashion. I was so into this role that I often took ownership of other’s safety responsibilities. I knew things needed to be done one way or another for health and safety reasons.

Looking back I knew the script so well I could “wing it”, using my technical literacy, script and compliance focus. Yet something was missing.

This way of working did not feel wrong. From an organizational perspective, it worked. However quietly shaping my career, my commitment, and far more keeping me under the illusion of progress.

Over time, the feeling became familiar. I was capable, knowledgeable, and dependable, but operating on autopilot in a void. Efficient and compliant yet disconnected from passion. Safety had become a directive-driven role, not the purpose that once fueled me to contribute to workers health and safety.

Negative Scripts Can Become Very Persistent

Most of us move through our careers guided by unseen scripts we rarely examine. Beliefs such as always saying yes, equating expertise with success, or avoiding disagreement quietly shape how we work and lead. Formed through culture and experience, these scripts persist through repetition, limiting impact and growth.

Like a vinyl record, the groove deepens each time the same track plays. Limiting beliefs work the same way, reinforced not by force, but by familiarity.

Change begins with awareness. When you notice the groove, you can pause and lift the needle. In that space, you create room for a new script grounded in intention, self-trust, and growth, but it is not always easy to recognice the void.

Walking Out of The Void

Years past and I did not see significant growth. I wanted to speak with clarity and conviction my reflections on Safety culture and leadership. To lead with purpose, to pursue opportunities that actually mattered to my growth. Hence the groove was so deep that made me feel I was on the rigth track. I couldn’t see what was holding me back and how to get out of the void.

The truth was uncomfortable: my own internal script was stronger than my ambition. I was reinforcing doubts. Deferring to “the way things have always been.” Supporting my fears instead of my growth. Years past, I deepened the groove, until I realized I wasn’t expected to drive safety culture, I was expected to drive just a safety program.

I needed to shift from managing to leading, from compliance to connection. This EHS professional was looking outside the role, and inside himself. I wanted to shape the system and culture by influence. I realized in Health and Safety there was work to do beyond programs, and started a journey to recognize limiting beliefs in me and others. It was until I confronted that, no external change will move me forward, the way out was inside of myself.

Break Free From Limiting Beliefs in Three Steps

Time to move on, what’s one attitude or belief that might be holding you back? For example, here is one personal script: “I needed to handle everything myself—asking for help makes me look weak.” Sound familiar?. Imagine how your career could shift if you replace it with: “Collaboration is a strength, I can build influence by engaging others.”

This is just an example, on a small adjustment on your script and we will call this, tuning-up your faulty thinking. Below I leave you with 3 simple steps that can dramatically change the course of your career:

  • Spot the script: Notice when the old belief pops up. Keep a quick journal or make a mental note each time you catch yourself acting from it. i.e.: “I need to handle everything myself”
  • Test a new story: The next time you feel the urge to go solo, pause. Ask a trusted colleague for input or delegate a task, even if it feels uncomfortable. Observe what happens—often, you’ll see positive results. A new script has been written.
  • Celebrate small wins: Each time you act from your new belief, acknowledge it. Share your progress with a coach or peer. Over time, these small shifts add up to big changes in confidence and outcomes.

It seems easy to do, but to become aware of our own scripts and see through the limiting beliefs is the hardest part, it can play against our ego and comfort zone.

Final thoughts

Our EHS career is more important than you may realize, it isn’t just a job. It’s your reputation, your brand, your voice, your own craft. It’s the legacy you’re building every day, whether you’re aware of it or not.

So here’s the real question: who is actually in control of that legacy, is it you, or the scripts you’ve been carrying for years?

Those scripts don’t disappear on their own. They must be identified, challenged, and intentionally rewritten.
